Instagram Launches Alerts for Parents When Teenagers Search for Suicide or Self-Harm Content
Instagram has announced a new feature aimed at enhancing digital safety for teenagers, where it will begin in the coming weeks to send alerts to parents and mothers if it notices their children repeatedly searching for content related to suicide or self-harm within a short period of time.
How Does the New Feature Work?
The feature will be available to parents enrolled in the parental supervision system within the application. Instagram explains that the goal is to enable parents to intervene early and provide psychological support to their children before risks escalate.
The company indicates that directly searching for content that incites suicide or self-harm is already prohibited on the platform, according to a report by the website “TechCrunch”.
However, the new system will monitor repeated search attempts for:
-
Phrases that encourage suicide or self-harm.
-
Terms indicating that the teenager is at psychological risk.
-
General words such as “suicide” or “self-harm”.
When these searches are repeated, the alert will be sent to parents via email, text messages, or the WhatsApp application, in addition to an in-app notification. The alert will contain guidance resources that help parents open a supportive dialogue with their children.
A Step Amid Legal Pressures
This step comes amid increasing legal pressures on technology companies, including Meta, the owner of Instagram, which faces lawsuits related to the platforms' failure to protect teenagers from psychological harms caused by social media.
During hearings before the federal court in Northern California, Instagram's head Adam Mosseri was questioned about the platform's delay in launching vital safety features, such as the nudity filter in private messages for teenagers.
Testimonies in separate cases also showed that the parental control tools currently available have not achieved a tangible impact in reducing compulsive use of the application by children, especially those facing significant life pressures.
Balance Between Protection and Privacy
Instagram confirmed that it was careful not to send alerts excessively to avoid losing their effectiveness, and that alerts will only be issued after repeated searches within a specified time period, in consultation with experts in the field of suicide and self-harm prevention.
The feature will begin soon in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, with plans to expand it to other countries later this year.
In the future, the platform plans to expand the scope of alerts to include cases where teenagers interact with artificial intelligence tools within the application on topics of suicide or self-harm, to enhance proactive protection for teenagers online.
With these updates, Instagram seeks to improve digital safety tools, reduce psychological risks, while meeting the growing demands for accountability of social media platforms for their impact on teenagers' mental health.
