UAE bans the use of social media for those under 15

الإمارات تحظر استخدام وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي لمن هم دون 15 عامًا

The United Arab Emirates has become the first Arab country to take a direct step to restrict children's access to social media platforms, after announcing the application of new rules that prevent those under the age of 15 from creating or using personal accounts on various digital platforms, as part of its efforts to enhance the protection of children in the digital environment.

The decision comes amid growing global concerns about the negative effects of social media on children and adolescents, especially with high rates of exposure to inappropriate content and the risks of cyberbullying and digital addiction.

New Child Online ProtectionResolution

The UAE Council of Ministers has issued a decision setting a minimum age of 15 for the use of social media platforms and the establishment of personal accounts on them.

Under the decision, children under the age of 15 will not be allowed to own or operate accounts on the various social media platforms, while the companies owning these platforms will be required to verify the ages of users and take the necessary measures to ensure compliance with the new rules.

The move aims to enhance children's safety and protect them from the increased risks associated with using the internet and interacting via digital platforms.

Timeout for Platforms toReconcile

UAE authorities have given social media companies up to 12 months to review existing accounts and verify the ages of their owners.

During this period, platforms are required to remove or close accounts belonging to users below the new legal limit, with more accurate age verification systems in place when creating new accounts.

The competent authorities confirmed that failure to comply with these requirements may expose the platforms to severe regulatory penalties that may amount to restricting or banning their services within the country.

Reasons for Decision and Risk Targeted by

The UAE government explained that the decision was in response to growing concerns about children's online safety.

These concerns include exposure to inappropriate content, contact with unknown people, the risks of cyberbullying, as well as the psychological effects of excessive use of social media.

The authorities also seek to limit the collection of children's personal data and enhance their digital privacy in light of the unprecedented expansion of the use of electronic platforms.

UAE joins a rising globaltrend

The UAE is not the first country in the world to adopt such measures, but it has become the first Arab country to directly implement this type of restriction.

In late 2025, Australia passed a law banning children under 16 from using social media platforms, drawing on studies linking excessive use to higher rates of anxiety, depression and cyberbullying.

Several other countries, including the UK, Canada, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia and a number of European countries, have also started studying or implementing similar measures aimed at protecting children and adolescents in the digital space.

special rules for adolescents between 15 and 16 years

Although adolescents between the ages of 15 and 16 are allowed to use social media, the decision imposes additional measures to ensure their safety.

These measures include more sophisticated monitoring and control tools, strict privacy settings, restrictions on communicating with strangers, as well as mechanisms to manage usage time and reduce exposure to age-appropriate content.

These measures aim to strike a balance between leveraging technology and protecting younger users from digital risks.

A Tighter Future for the Regulation of DigitalPlatforms

The UAE decision reflects a growing global trend towards greater controls on tech companies and social media platforms in relation to child protection.

Experts believe that the coming years may witness more legislation that obliges platforms to apply more accurate verification techniques of users' ages, enhance parental controls, and provide safer digital environments for young age groups.

As internet use continues to expand among children and adolescents, the protection of minors has become one of the top priorities that governments around the world are seeking to address through new legislation and regulations.
