Microsoft Misleads Users Who Want to Remove Its Browser

Microsoft Turns the “Uninstall Edge” Guide into a Marketing Campaign Against Chrome

In a move that raises questions about its intentions toward fair competition, Microsoft launched an official support page titled “How to Uninstall Microsoft Edge”, but the content reveals a covert strategy aimed at discouraging users from abandoning its browser, with a notable focus on tarnishing the reputation of Google Chrome, the most widely used browser in the world.

The Uninstall Guide: A Disguised Marketing Front

Instead of providing clear technical instructions for removing the browser, the page immediately turns into a detailed presentation of Edge's features, with a provocative message at the beginning: Are you sure you want to uninstall Edge?”, followed by a lengthy list of its features, such as:

  • Integration with Copilot (Microsoft's AI chatbot).
  • The Designer tool for graphic design.
  • The Read Aloud feature.
  • Claims of improved battery consumption (25 more minutes than Chrome).

Notably, the page ignores any mention of competing browsers other than Chrome, in a clear indication that the goal is not to help the user, but to score points in the raging browser war.

The Glaring Contradiction: Between the Title and the Content

Despite the attractive title, the page is completely devoid of any actual steps to remove Edge, and instead contains implicit warnings such as: “Uninstalling will cause you to lose access to the built-in Copilot”, even though the tool works on other browsers. Microsoft also highlights security features such as SmartScreen and Password Monitor, ignoring the fact that many browsers offer similar protection.

The Bigger Irony: Uninstallation is “Forbidden” Except in the European Union!

The page reveals — unintentionally — Microsoft's double standard policy: while users in European Union countries are allowed to easily delete Edge (due to anti-monopoly laws), users outside Europe can only remove it through complex third-party tools, something the company did not refer to at all in its “guide”.

Continuation of a Series of Controversial Tactics

This step comes only months after the Bing search engine scandal, which manipulated the user interface to mimic Google's design in order to deceive users, before Microsoft retreated under the pressure of criticism. Observers believe that the campaign against Chrome entrenches a pattern of strategies that test the limits of fair competition, exploiting Windows's dominance over users' devices.

A Support Guide or Misleading Advertisement?

Microsoft, through this page, treats users as hostages in its battle against Google, instead of granting them freedom of choice. This incident is a stark reminder of the need to strengthen oversight of monopolistic practices, and confirms that the browser war is entering a new phase of hostile tactics, where technical support tools are used as marketing weapons.

Note:

According to experts, Edge can be uninstalled manually through modifications in the Registry Editor or by using programs such as Revo Uninstaller, but the process carries risks that may affect system stability.
