Instagram Will Give You More Control Over Your Content Recommendations

Instagram Reveals an Advanced Tool That Grants Users Greater Control Over the Content Recommendations Algorithm

Instagram has launched a new tool that gives users an unprecedented ability to see how the recommendations algorithm works and control it, starting with Reels clips which are the most widespread type of content on the platform.

The feature carries the name “Your Algorithm”, and it is designed to display the topics that Instagram relies on to personalize the suggested content for each user, while allowing control over these interests and modifying them so that the system more accurately reflects the user's preferences.

The new tool appears via an icon carrying the shape of two lines with two hearts between them in the upper right corner while watching Reels clips. Once pressed, the user receives an AI-generated list that summarizes their interests based on their activity inside the app.

The user can see a comprehensive description of their interests such as: "You have recently been interested in creativity, fitness, sports enthusiasm, and skateboarding", with the ability to easily share this description via the Stories feature.

Below the description, a more detailed list of topics is displayed that the system believes fall within the user's circle of interest. Control over the appearance of each topic is possible via the options “Show me more” or “Show me less”, so that recommendations adapt immediately. The tool also provides the ability to manually add new interests by typing keywords inside a dedicated field.

With this step, Instagram gives users clearer and more transparent tools to understand how their suggested content is built, within the framework of its endeavor to enhance personal control and a fair and transparent user experience.

This step comes as part of the escalating competition between Instagram and TikTok, especially after TikTok introduced last year the feature "Manage Topics" which gives the user a limited ability to customize the content shown to them. But Instagram is clearly raising the level of competition; it offers a list designed entirely according to each individual user's interests, with the ability to manually add new interests, which TikTok does not offer as it relies on general and limited categories.

The feature "Your Algorithm" begins appearing first inside the United States, with plans to roll it out gradually in more countries soon, with initial support for the English language only.

Instagram also plans to expand the capabilities of this tool in the coming period, to include personalizing content inside the Explore tab, then later other parts of the app that rely on recommendations. The company's plans also include supporting more languages to ensure the feature reaches a larger base of users around the world.

This step indicates a clear direction from Instagram toward enhancing transparency and reducing the criticisms directed at recommendation algorithms which have long been described as a "black box" that is difficult to understand how it works. With the availability of this degree of control, users may be able to see the real reasons behind the appearance of certain clips to them, and calibrate the experience with greater precision, which enhances their sense of control over their experience inside the app.

Technology experts also expect

that the feature will contribute to improving the quality of recommendations and reducing unwanted content, especially with the user's ability to modify certain interests or delete them entirely, which drives Instagram's algorithm to update its analysis method immediately.

On the other hand, it is likely that brands and content creators will benefit from this tool, as it will help them understand the nature of the audience their posts reach, and identify the segments that should be focused on to increase reach and engagement. With continuous development, this feature may transform into a powerful tool in digital marketing strategies inside Instagram.

This comes at a time when Meta is trying to improve the image of its platforms following criticisms related to content management methods, where the company affirms that launching "Your Algorithm" is a step within a series of updates aimed at enhancing privacy, raising the level of security, and giving users more control over their experience.

It is expected that Instagram will announce in the coming months additional features related to the viewing experience, improving content discovery tools, and perhaps integrating generative artificial intelligence in personalizing short clips, making the experience more interactive and seamless.
