Decline in the Birth Rate in Egypt for the First Time Since 2007

77,000 Fewer Births in Egypt During 2024 — What Could Be the Reason?!

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics revealed important preliminary data on births, deaths, and population growth in Egypt for the year 2024.

Key Points:

Egypt recorded approximately 1.968 million births in 2024, compared to about 2.045 million in 2023, a decline of about 77,000 births.

First: Historic Decline

This is the first time since 2007 that birth rates have declined in Egypt, making it a pivotal moment in the country's demographic history. Experts attribute this to several factors, most notably the economic pressures that have reduced many families' desire to have more children, in addition to the government's awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging family planning and reducing population growth rates.

Second: Government Efforts

The Egyptian government has launched a series of initiatives and programs to control population growth, including awareness campaigns on family planning and providing support for families with fewer children. These efforts appear to have begun to bear fruit, as reflected in the 2024 birth statistics.

Third: Daily and Monthly Averages

The statistics show that the daily average of births in Egypt in 2024 was approximately 5,392 births per day, and the monthly average was approximately 164,025 births per month. These figures reflect a notable shift compared to previous years.

Fourth: Geographic Distribution

The data reveals significant variation in birth rates between Egyptian governorates. The governorates with the highest number of births in 2024 were:

  • Cairo Governorate
  • Giza Governorate
  • Sharkia Governorate

While the governorates with the lowest number of births were:

  • South Sinai Governorate
  • North Sinai Governorate
  • Matrouh Governorate

Fifth: Total Fertility Rate

The total fertility rate in Egypt declined in 2024 to approximately 2.7 children per woman, compared to approximately 2.85 children per woman in 2023. This decline is considered a positive indicator toward achieving demographic balance.

Deaths and Natural Increase

On the other hand, the number of deaths in Egypt in 2024 reached approximately 610,000, compared to approximately 583,000 in 2023, an increase of about 27,000 deaths. As a result, the natural population increase (births minus deaths) in Egypt in 2024 was approximately 1.359 million people.

These statistics reflect the complex demographic reality facing Egypt, and highlight the importance of continuing the efforts to control population growth while improving quality of life and economic conditions for citizens.
