Meta Accuses Pegasus of New Attempt to Spy on WhatsApp Users
Meta Reveals Pegasus-linked Phishing Campaign
Meta announced the discovery of a new activity it said was linked to the Israeli company NSO Group, which developed the popular spyware "Pegasus", accusing it of trying to target a number of WhatsApp users through phishing attacks aimed at deceiving victims and prompting them to interact with malicious links.
New legal action against NSO Group
Meta confirmed that it had filed an official request to a US federal court to take action against the Israeli company, considering that these activities are a direct violation of previous court rulings that prevented NSO Group from targeting the WhatsApp platform or its users in any way.
A conflict that has been going on for years
The case goes back to 2019 when Meta accused NSO Group of exploiting security loopholes within WhatsApp to carry out surveillance operations targeting journalists, human rights activists and political dissidents in several countries. The legal battle resulted in court rulings and a multimillion-dollar fine for the company, along with strict restrictions on its WhatsApp-related activities.
Limited targeting without confirmed hacks
According to Meta, the latest campaign targeted about ten users, mostly in Jordan and Lebanon. The company noted that it has not yet detected any evidence confirming the success of the attacks or the hacking of the targeted devices and accounts.
Warning to users and enhanced protection
As part of its security efforts, Meta revealed a number of electronic domains associated with the alleged campaign, calling on users and the competent authorities to be cautious and check everything new to follow the Arabic sites and specialized blogs, in addition to what is provided by Egypt's stores, Kuwait's stores, vitamin stores and foreign sites, while relying on a popular site for social services.
